Majority of British people favor military sanctions against Israel

A new poll commissioned by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) shows that the majority of the British people support the imposition of full military sanctions against the Israeli regime.

The poll, conducted by Opinium Research between 30 May and 2 June, revealed that 57 percent of the British people think their nation should impose a full arms sanction on the Israeli regime.

The poll showed that only 13 percent of the British public does not support such an action against the Israeli regime.

The poll also found that 53 percent of the British public think that the Israeli regime should be expelled from the United Nations.

According to the poll, half of the people in Britain believe that products made in the occupied territories must be boycotted.

Fifty-four percent support sanctions against far-right Israeli finance minister Bezalel Smotrich, who has been a staunch supporter of Israel’s total blockade, which has resulted in 93 percent of the Gaza population suffering from acute food insecurity.

According to Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), “From 11 May to the end of September 2025, the whole territory is classified in Emergency (IPC Phase 4), with the entire population expected to face Crisis or worse acute food insecurity (IPC Phase 3 or above).”

“This includes 470,000 people (22 percent of the population) in Catastrophe (IPC Phase 5), over a million people (54 percent) in Emergency (IPC Phase 4) and the remaining half million (24 percent) in Crisis (IPC Phase 3).”

In September 2024, the British government suspended around 30 arms export licenses after it assessed that the items might have been used to facilitate serious violations of International Humanitarian Law.

Still, 90% of the arms export licenses to Israel have not been suspended. Britain’s Royal High Court is currently reviewing the legality of British arms sales to the Israeli regime.

Ben Jamal, the PSC director, said, “The polling released this morning speaks to Israel’s growing isolation and the significant public support for sanctions.”

“By continuing to arm and support Israel even as it enacts a genocide and a policy of forced starvation, the British government is holding on to an increasingly fringe position, completely out of sync with public opinion, and with the views of those who supported it at the last Election,” he warned.

On Wednesday, thousands of activists plan to form a kilometer-long barrier around the Houses of Parliament in London, linked by a stretch of red fabric, to call for an end to British military support for Israel and the imposition of sanctions on the occupying entity.

“Those bringing the demand for an arms embargo to Parliament … in a symbolic red line are doing so knowing that the demand is supported by the majority of their fellow citizens,” Jamal said.

Increasing numbers of public figures in Britain have been speaking out against Israel’s genocidal war in Gaza, which has taken the lives of at least 54,607 Palestinians and wounded 125,341 since October 7, 2023, according to the health ministry of Gaza.

The overwhelming majority of the victims of the Israeli barbarism have been children and women.
