The Revolutionary Party (CCM), through its new election manifesto, has promised major reforms to the country's water services over the next five years, including improving access to clean and safe water for citizens as well as promoting the agriculture and livestock sector.
Speaking about the plan, the Chairman of the CCM Manifesto Committee, Professor Kitila Mkumbo, said that the government will establish a National Water Grid, as a strategic step to ensure that water services are available on an equal basis throughout the country as is the case in the electricity sector.
According to Prof. Mkumbo, the government intends to use the Great Lakes of Victoria, Tanganyika, and Nyasa, as well as major rivers, as the main sources of water for this major strategic project.
In the initial phase, the government will build a large-scale project from Lake Victoria to Dodoma, which will involve the construction of two main pipelines—one for drinking water and the other for irrigated agriculture and livestock use.
