Iran condemns Israel’s attacks on Syria, says Western supporters ‘accountable for escalation’

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei

The spokesman for Iran’s Foreign Ministry has strongly condemned the Israeli regime’s recent attacks on Syria’s infrastructure.

In a statement on Friday, Esmaeil Baghaei said the Israeli regime’s attacks are a flagrant violation of the United Nations Charter and fundamental norms of the international law.

“The Zionist regime’s military attacks on Syria are a clear example of aggression against Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity which are being carried out with the purpose of destroying and weakening the Muslim country.”

He said Israel’s airstrikes in Syria exposed the “dangerous and law-breaking nature” of the regime.

Baghaei urged the international community to take immediate action to end the Israeli occupation of the Syrian territory.

He said Israel’s supporters and its Western arm suppliers, especially the United States, are responsible for the escalation of insecurity in the region and the violation of international peace and security as the regime continues to attack regional countries.

Israeli artillery units struck an area in Syria’s southwestern province of Dara’a, causing “significant material losses,” in the wake of claims that two rockets were fired from the area toward the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

The Syrian news agency SANA reported that the Israeli occupation targeted the Yarmouk Basin area in western Dara’a with artillery fire late on Tuesday, but provided no further details.

The agency did not report casualties; but described the damage as extensive.

Militant factions, led by the HTS, toppled Bashar al-Assad’s government on December 8, 2024.

Since the collapse of Assad’s government, the Israeli military has been launching airstrikes against military installations, facilities, and arsenals belonging to Syria’s now-defunct army.

The United Nations has condemned ongoing Israeli attacks inside Syrian territory and continued violations in and around the buffer zone created as part of a 1974 ceasefire agreement with Damascus.
